Muscular Endurance

 

·       Push Up Test​

Location: Anywhere that has a clear surrounding and flat ground.

Repeatability: Same time of day and same temperature.

Practicality: The athlete will have their arms shoulder width apart and they will move from a full extenstion to a 90 degree angle consistantly. Their feet will be together, like in a plank position. The test will last 1 minute, and they will have to try and maintain a steady pace, and see how many push ups they can do in 1 minute. 

Equipment:

·       Mat

·       Stopwatch​

Positives

  • A positive for this test is that it is a very easy test to test. It does not require much knowledge to the test, as you will only nee to know how to do a push up, and if you are doing a full push up or a box push up. 

  • Another positive for this test is that it requires minimal equipment, but you could make do with only having one piece of equipment, which would be a stopwatch or something that can time how long you are doing it for. A mat is optional as you could do it anywhere which is a flat surface. The mat is only for protection in case you fall, or if you are doing the box push up as your knees will be on the ground.

  • The test can vary depending on how long you can do it, this is why the timings for the test is a positive. You have the option to do it for 30 seconds or 1 minute, depending on the person or if you are capable enough to do push ups in the correct position for 1 minute. So having less time can make it easier for someone, but the normative data will not be as acurate as they the majority of the normative data is tested for the 1 minute push up test. 

 

Negatives

  • This test can be very tiring, as it is a maximal effort test. You will only have one chance to do it when you are tested, as there are other tests to do. Having only one oppertunity, many people aren't aware how they should pace themselves when they are being tested. Therefore when someone goes too quick in the beginning, they are more than likely to slow down and get more tired after the 30 second mark.

  • Another negative for this test is that the technique should be correct 90% of the time you are being tested. If you are not doing the correct technique, the test will be inaccurate and you won't feel as if you completed anything.

  • The test can also get very repetitive, as you are doing push ups for either 30 seconds straight or 1 minute straight. This can get quite boring as you are just doing the same thing over and over, and you can't exactly concentrate on anything else as all your energy should go into this test. 

 

·       Sit Up Test

Location: Anywhere that has a clear surface and flat ground.

Repeatability: Same time of day and same temperature.

Practicality:The athlete will sit on the ground, with legs infront at a 45 degree angle. A buddy can be sitting on their partners feet to prevent them coming up when he/she is sitting up. The test will last 1 minute, and they will be testing how many sit ups you can do in a minute. 

 

Positives and Negatives: The strengths and weaknesses for this test is exactly the same as the push up test, as they are both testing for muscular endurance, so they should show the same results and strengths and weaknesses.
